Mom, if you have no work in progress (!!), I would like a helmet hat !”
– Did you find a pattern on the web ?
– You need a pattern ? Even if I tell you exactly what I want ?
– ….!!

I need to clarify : I have never make crochetwork, except amigurumis !

Supplies :
– 2 light grey yarn balls (50 gr – 133 m – 3-6 US needles)
– 1 red yarn ball (50 gr – 133 m – 3-6 US needles)
– some dark grey yarn leftovers.

Rnd 1 : 2 Dc in each stitch (20)
Rnd 2 : *1 Dc – 2 Dc in the next sticth* (30)
Rnd 3 : *2 Dc – 2 Dc in the next sticth* (40)
Rnd 4 : *3 Dc – 2 Dc in the next sticth* (50)
Rnd 5 : *4 Dc – 2 Dc in the next sticth* (60)
Rnd 6 : *5 Dc – 2 Dc in the next sticth* (70)
Rnd 7 : *6 Dc – 2 Dc in the next sticth* (80)
Rnd 8 : *7 Dc – 2 Dc in the next sticth* (90)
Rnd 9 : *8 Dc – 2 Dc in the next sticth* (100)
Rnds 10 to 23 : 1 Dc in each stitch (100)
From now on, turn your work at the end of the row

Fold the hat in two and pick up  44 stitches on each side of the fold.

Rnds 1 to 4 : 1 Dc in each stitch
Rnd 5 : 1 Dc in each stitch  (red)

Cut 230 strands about 17 cm in the red yarn.

Fold 3 strands in two. Slip the loop in both sides stitch.
Tie by slipping ends in the loop.

Tie 3 other strands in the same stitch but slippling the loop in the opposite direction.

The visor is symmetrical along the vertical axis but it’s not symmetrical along the horizontal axis (“I want the visor to cover my chin to prevent breeze“).

For more comfort, I sew a piece of mesh inside the visor.

A sewed button to fix the visor on the left side.
On the right side I sewed scratch to fix it without problem while wearing sunglasses or ski mask.

“I want to tan” or “it’s freezing”, he won’t go unnoticed on ski run !

First prize in the “wear it” contest.

Warning : it’s my first crochet work !!
I did an empirical approach, thinking I was Penelope (⇒ often starting over  !)
You may adapt my pattern…

  1. Help! I am trying to make this hat as a gift for my fiance, I am having a terrible time with it. I’ve never used a pattern before, I usually just make blankets, my hat looks like a flower rather than a hat. The edges are all turned up like a wave. Did I do something wrong? I’m on row 13 where you are doing a straight dc for 100

      • I figured it out finally. I was doing the whole thing wrong. I thought that I was supposed to put the first number of stitches in the same stitch like I was supposed to put the double one. I put 8 stitches in one stitch, then went to the next stitch and put 2. I did that for the whole thing and I ended up ripping it all apart. Thank you for your help tho, and this is a wonderful pattern. I’m hoping to make hats for all of my family using it, some of the colors will be different tho. Thank you so much!

  2. This is my first project ever for crocheting anything. My wife (of 50 years) who does a lot of this sort of thing, taught me to sew and I do a lot of that. For some reason I really like this helmet so I want to try to make it. Since we are retired I look for things to do especially in winter. She had several questions about this project like: what are the measurements (I’m in WV, USA but metric is ok), she thinks the gauge needle you recommend is a little small and thinks I may want to use larger. I think you recommended acrylic yarn is that correct? Any other information would be appreciated.

    • I don’t know why, but your comment arrived in my spam box… Due to Xmas & the New Year, I’m just seing it now, so sorry for being late in my response.
Yes I recommended using acrylic, because wool wouldn’t be comfortable on face (it scratches ;-) ).
For the gauge, the label on my ball yarn says : 3-4 mm/3-6 US. I have also a ball yarn pictogram where it’s written “3-light” (yarn “size”).
I remain at your disposal for any other question (much more quickly than this time, sorry again).

      • Ooops, just a french word wich remains in the English instructions :-(
Replace it by “to” (ie “Rnds 10 to 23”), sorry for that mistake.
Send me a pic of your hat!

  3. I want to make this hat, but I’m not sure what size 3-6 US is in millimeters
Is the yarn a worsted weight or something lighter? Many of the 50g balls of yarn I have are 78-109m. Please help.

    • The label on my ball yarn says : 3-4 mm / 3-6 US.
I don’t know if it means something for you, but I have also a ball yarn pictogram where it’s written “3-light” (100% acrylic to prevent scratch ;-) )
Sorry for the delay in responding, I was on holidays without internet connexion…
